Abstract:
In this talk, I will introduce some of the projects that I have worked on over the past seven to ten years. I will begin by describing an air quality forecast system that we developed for Mexico City, based on Neural Networks. Then, I will talk about a web visualization tool for oceanic and atmospheric data called OWGIS. And finally, I will talk about a Lagrangian particle system for forecasting oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico. I am a new faculty at the Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies (COAPS), and I hope this talk may ignite the interest of some faculty and students to start future collaborations.
Dr. Olmo S. Zavala-Romero is a Research Faculty at the Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies, Florida State University (FSU). His current research interests are now-cast weather prediction, data assimilation in ocean models, and deep learning for oceanography. He obtained his Ph.D. from the Department of Scientific Computing at FSU and has a master’s degree in Computer Sciences from the National Institute of Astrophysics Optics and Electronics (Puebla, Mexico). Besides his interest in the earth sciences, Olmo has a passion for medical imaging; in this area he has made contributions on deep learning algorithms of the automatic segmentation of prostate zones, and breast and prostate cancer.
