Professor Max Gunzburger has been named by Web of Science as one of the world’s most influential researchers. Gunzburger is among the select few who have been most frequently cited by their peers over the last decade. In 2020, fewer than 6,200, or about 0.1% of the world's researchers in 21 research fields and across multiple fields, have earned this exclusive distinction.

This recognition places Gunzburger in an elite group recognized for exceptional research influence, with multiple highly-cited papers that rank in the top 1% by citations for year and field.

Gunzburger, Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor and Krafft Professor of Mathematics, is former chair of the Department of Scientific Computing. He is a SIAM Fellow, and his awards include the prestigious W.T. and Idalia Reid Prize in Mathematics. Gunzburger’s research contributions are exceptionally wide ranging, and include flow control, finite element analysis, climate change, image processing, aerodynamics, and Voronoi tessellations.
